I'm continuing the E. Norman Collection with the next painting of this classic '58 Cadillac. This painting is a watercolor on Arches 300# cold press paper and is about 14"x20".
This is the first couple steps after finishing the pencil drawing. I've laid in the base coat of yellow and started developing the shadow. While the big washes of color were drying, I started on some of the detail in the bumper.
Here is a little sneak-peek into what I'm currently working on....
Now the image is starting to take shape. The palette for this painting is pretty limited.. It's primarily Naples Yellow, Cadmium Yellow, Neutral Tint and Cobalt Blue. A little bit of Raw Sienna was used for the hood ornament.
Here you can see the liquid frisket appied to one headlight and the effects of the masking on the other headlight
The headlight assembly is now complete and some of the chrome trim has been added. I've penciled in the grill and I also started on the license plate. There are many thin layers of paint that have been built up to acheive the deisred color values.
I am really enjoying working on this painting. They certainly don't make cars like this anymore
In this phase I finally finished the grill. The grill is a flat metal and has no reflections, so it became a value study of one color. It was a great exercise for me. The fascinating part of this painting is portraying so much detail with a pretty limited color pallette.
I'm looking forward to getting back in to the chrome so I can play with some color again. Next, I'm going to work on the license plate frame. The license plate shows the last letters of the word "Caddy" and up in the right corner is the date "58."
The closer I got to finishing this piece, the more excited I got and I forgot to take photograph the last few steps. Sorry about that.
But, it's finished at last and I had an absolute blast painting it.
