This piece is going to be 8" x 12". After penciling in the tree I masked off the leaves and started laying in the backgraound and the grass in the foreground.
There's been a few steps since the last picture. I darkened in the foliage bahind tha main tree, started to remove the masking of the leaves and put in the underpainting for the main tree. I also nearly completed the grass in the foreground.
Here I've darkened the tree and the grass to make the highlights really pop. The light filtering through tree onto has presented a particular chalennge for watercolor.
Now I've started working on the part of the painting that really grabbed me about about this image. The sun shining on the leaves really lights them up from behind. Here I have applied the lightest color of the leaves, cad yellow light.
It became a mad dash to the end and I skipped a couple steps, but here is the final product. After laying in the light and mid tones in the leaves I strengthened the shadows to reinforce the light.
